CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY CHALLENGE

Deadline Extended to November 30, 2009

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is offering awards of up to $500 per classroom to spur creative approaches to encouraging energy-efficient behavior in school, at home, and in the community. NYSERDA’s Energy Smart Students program will fund up to 30 innovative projects that increase students’ energy and global climate change knowledge and awareness, while providing student leadership opportunities and outreach to the community. Kindergarten through grade 12 teachers and informal educators are invited to apply. The deadline for applying has been extended. Applications must be received by November 30, 2009.

Funds can be used to purchase supplies or equipment for use in hands-on activities related to energy efficiency or for community education events. Winners will be chosen based on their creativity in delivering the climate change message and the extent to which students take a leadership role in school and community efforts. Extra points will be awarded to schools with greater than 50% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch and for projects adopting a multi-disciplinary approach involving two or more subject areas.
To view the complete application and proposal package, please visit NYSERDA’s Energy Smart Students website at www.GetEnergySmart.org, and click on ‘Energy Education.’ Winning projects from previous years are also posted for your review.

Awards are available for educators at schools located in communities served by one of New York’s investor-owned utilities: Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation; Consolidated Edison of New York, Inc.; National Grid; New York State Electric and Gas Corporation; Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation; and Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc.

NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation, uses innovation and technology to solve some of New York's most difficult energy and environmental problems in ways that improve the State's economy.
