Albany, NY The New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) recently awarded $250,000 to the East Irondequoit
Central School District to upgrade the energy efficiency of a new
building. The New York Energy $mart New Construction Program provided
the funding to equip the 143,000 sq. ft. middle school with a geothermal
heat pump system, air-to-air heat exchangers, and high-efficiency
windows. The building will be ready for September 2003 occupancy.
"NYSERDA's New Construction Program will help make the new Middle
school a state-of-the-art facility," said NYSERDA President William
M. Flynn. "More importantly though, East Irondequoit School District
taxpayers will benefit from this energy efficiency for the life of
the building. NYSERDA offers districts technical and financial assistance
to offset the cost of capital projects and reduce future energy use."
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) of Syracuse,
NYSERDA's technical assistance provider, worked with Clark Patterson
Associates, the school's design professionals, to review equipment
specifications selected by the design team as an energy-efficient
design. The measures include a geothermal system, which uses the Earth's
relatively constant underground temperatures as either a heat source
or heat sink, to reduce the cooling and heating needs of the school.
In addition, the school will be installing an air-to-air heat exchanger
that provides more efficient ventilation, and specially glazed and
insulated with argon gas, high-efficiency windows.
"Our schools can benefit from NYSERDA's New Construction Program.
The new heat pump system will save over $40,000 annually, and the
incentives and technical assistance from this program helps ensure
the success of our new energy efficient middle school," said
Capital Project Manager for East Irondequoit School District Sandra
Neu.
By installing the recommended measures, the middle school should
avoid an annual energy consumption of 766,146 kWh, saving $112,216.
During the summer months, the facility will avoid a peak summer demand
of 960 kW.
Funding for this project is provided through NYSERDA's New York
Energy $martSM program, that lowers electricity costs
by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's electric utilities
move to competition. The programs are available to all electric distribution
customers (residential, commercial, institutional and industrial)
of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland,
and Rochester Gas and Electric.
All New York Energy $martSM programs are funded
by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers
of participating utilities. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation
established by law in 1975, administers SBC funds and programs under
an agreement with the Public Service Commission.
