Albany, NY Utilizing the New York Energy $mart funding, the
Ciminelli Development Company's Village Park Office Building #3, in
Williamsville, uses 30% less energy than comparable new office buildings.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)
provided Ciminelli $135,000 in incentives for the installation of
energy-efficient measures to improve operation of their new 110,000
sq. ft. Village Park Office Building.
"NYSERDA's aims to transform the way buildings are constructed,
through smart, energy-efficient equipment. Commercial real estate
developers, property managers and construction firms, like the Ciminelli
Development Company, can benefit from NYSERDA's New Construction Program
incentives," said NYSERDA President William M. Flynn. "NYSERDA
offers technical assistance to evaluate and design energy-efficient
options; and to make it all happen, provides cash back for the installation
of electric-efficiency measures. With this program, NYSERDA is influencing
new construction projects across the State."
Prior to construction, Wendel Duchscherer Architects and Engineers,
P.C. of Amherst, NY, under contract to NYSERDA, completed a technical
building technology study to determine the most effective alternatives.
The two-story facility is office space, with a lobby, cafeteria, fitness
room, data center, rest rooms and mechanical rooms. The study identified
opportunities for installation of:
Efficient water-source heat pump
Enhanced energy management system
Heat recovery wheels for the office space
Energy-efficient distribution transformers
As a result of the New Construction Program funding, the Village Park
Building will cut electric use by 295,250 kWh, and save $34,000 in
annual energy costs. A quick pay-back period of only 1.6 years recoups
the added measure costs. Also, a four-hour training course was given
to the building staff to familiarize them with the operation of the
new measures.
"The NYSERDA program and the financial incentives allowed us
to spend more effort investigating alternatives. As a result, we upgraded
several major components, creating a state-of-the-art facility, which
both Village Park Associates, LLP and our tenants are extremely proud
of," said Kirk Burzynski, spokesperson for the developer.
NYSERDA's New York Energy $martSM program lowers electricity costs
by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's electric utilities
move to competition. The programs are available to all electric distribution
customers (residential, commercial, institutional and industrial)
of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland,
and Rochester Gas and Electric. These programs are funded by a System
Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers of these
utilities. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation established by law
in 1975, administers SBC funds and programs under an agreement with
the Public Service Commission.
