New YMCA Southtowns Building will benefit from NYSERDA incentives
Incentive package will help save $14,000 per year in energy costs
West Seneca, NY - A new $7.2 million, 70,000 square foot YMCA complex
in southern Erie County will benefit from a series of energy-efficiency
measures provided through the New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA). The measures will save the facility more than
$14,000 in annual energy costs and provide its patrons a more comfortable
environment for recreation and other activities.
"This is yet another example of how a local business or organization,
when contemplating the construction of a new building, can seek out
and effectively utilize NYSERDA's New Construction Program to make
their facility more energy efficient, less costly and more comfortable.
I commend the YMCA of Greater Buffalo for pursuing the construction
of an energy-efficient facility," NYSERDA Acting President Peter
R. Smith said.
"By participating in the NYSERDA program, the YMCA was able
to include cost-effective, state-of-the-art equipment which was just
beyond the reach of the YMCA's financial resources. The NYSERDA consultants
provided a realistic view of equipment alternatives and operations
to help us save on energy costs. It was a great experience,"
said John D. Murray, YMCA of Greater Buffalo President and CEO.
Prior to construction, Wendel Duchscherer Architects and Engineers,
P.C. of Amherst, NY, under contract to NYSERDA, completed a building
technology study to determine the most effective alternatives. The
two-story brick veneer building will contain a full and auxiliary
gymnasium, two swimming pools, an indoor running track, and a children's
day watch and adventure area.
NYSERDA, through its New Construction Program, offered an incentive
of $41,000 for the design and installation of energy-efficient measures,
including 12 HVAC rooftop units with full enthalpy control, carbon
dioxide ventilation control for the 12 HVAC units, and DDC-controlled
lighting circuits.
As a result of the incentive funding, the YMCA Southtowns Building
is expected to reduce annual energy consumption by approximately 126,729
kWh/year, yielding a yearly energy savings of $14,000. A quick payback
period of only 1.27 years recoups the added measure costs.
All New York Energy $martSM programs are funded
by a System Benefits Charge (SBC) paid by electric distribution customers
of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, Niagara Mohawk, Orange and Rockland,
and Rochester Gas and Electric. NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation
established by law in 1975, administers SBC funds and programs under
an agreement with the Public Service Commission.
New York Energy $martSM programs are designed to
lower electricity costs by encouraging energy efficiency as the State's
electric utilities move to competition. The programs are available
to electric distribution customers (residential, commercial, institutional,
and industrial) who pay into the System Benefits Charge (SBC).
Since 1998, NYSERDA has provided more than $26 million to support
more than 500 projects in Erie and Niagara Counties. Combined with
co-funding from NYSERDA's partners, the value of these projects is
more than $65 million. Among some of the other customers NYSERDA is
working with in Erie and Niagara Counties, are: State University of
New York at Buffalo, Veridian Engineering, Inc., Quebecor, Kreher's
Poultry Farm, HSBC Bank USA and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.
