Distributed Generation/Combined Heat and Power Performance Protocols Released

Back

December 20, 2004

The Association of State Energy Research and Technology Transfer Institutions (ASERTTI) has announced the release of national performance interim protocols for distributed generation/combined heat and power systems and equipment. These protocols are available for use by all interested parties, including distributed generation (DG) and combined heat and power (CHP) system users, manufacturers, developers, engineers, and R&D organizations.

The U.S. Department of Energy and a consortium of ASERTTI members including NYSERDA have developed four interim test protocols through a collaborative program that included a 28-member stakeholder advisory committee and used existing standards as far as possible. These protocols will serve as a uniform basis for evaluating the performance of DG/CHP systems and enabling comparisons and evaluations based on applications, locations, and requirements. These interim test protocols are for laboratory testing, field (onsite) testing, long-term testing, and case studies. The interim protocols are intended for DG/CHP systems up to 3 MW in laboratory testing and up to 7 MW in field testing.

Comments on the protocols are welcome. This feedback will be used to move the protocols from interim to final versions. The performance protocols can be viewed and downloaded at www.dgdata.org.

A national database will archive results from systems applying these test protocols for public use. When available in early 2005, the database will allow interested parties to request results based on a variety of parameters. Results in the database will be comparable because only data collected according to the protocols will be included. Those who apply the test protocols in their testing and system evaluations will be invited to add their information to the database.

Additional information about the program is available from the partnerships page of the ASERTTI web site.
For questions or comments about the protocols, contact James Foster at NYSERDA.
